Sexually transmitted diseases can, in a very short span of time
devastate the person emotionally. Psychologists believe that Herpes
isn't as scary as the society has made it, over the years.
If adequate medication is given, it can reduce the pain during an outbreak to quite an extent. Moreover, in due course of time, the body develops and immunity towards the Herpes Simplex Virus.
In an interview of a 19 year old, she reveals how she got the virus and what changed after it was diagnosed.
• How old were you when you got diagnosed with Herpes?
I was 18.
• How did you realize that you had Herpes?
I noticed sores in the lower - abdominal region and around my vagina. It pained a little, but I ignored these symptoms thinking them to be result of some skin ailment. However, there came a time when I couldn't wear skinny jeans as it pained a little more.
This was when I realized that there was something terribly wrong and got my blood tested. After that I got to know that I have Genital Herpes.
• Who do you think would have transmitted the virus?
It was on my 18th birthday that I went to a bar to celebrate. I met a handsome guy there, with whom I had sex that night. As it was the first time I ever had sex, I suspect that it was him who gave me Herpes. I never saw or met him after that.
• How long did your first outbreak last?
It lasted for about half a month. Although it wasn't very severe and my life was more or less normal, it still had a significant impact. I had never experienced something like that earlier.
• Has Herpes hindered your relationships?
Yes indeed. I couldn't tell people that I was having Herpes and turned down many a proposal. I would make an excuse saying that I wasn't ready for a relationship yet or a simple - "I don't love you".
I did not want to make things awkward for both of us later on. I felt it was better to back out in the initial stages. I hesitated from getting into a relationship, courtesy of my medical condition.
• Has life changed after you contracted herpes? If yes, could you tell us how?
I have become more conscious than before. I know that I cannot engage in casual sex like most of my friends do. On many occasions I abstained from getting physical so that I don't transmit the infection.
In addition, my opinion on people with STDs has changed. Earlier I was under the impression that STDs are caused by people's own mistakes. But now I know that such things can happen unknowingly too.

My cousin became my support system and suggested me a herpes dating website. I met several amazing people on this platform who have either faced or are still facing rejection from those around them.
